Why pip values matter
The value of a pip measures how much you stand to earn or lose from a 1 pip change in a currency pair's exchange rate.It can help you assess how much of your capital is at risk, and is a foundation of more elaborate risk management strategies.
Pip value example
If you were to trade 1 lot of EUR/USD and your account denominated in EUR.
- One pip, in decimals: 0.0001
- Position size (in lots): 1
- Exchange rate: 1.0899
Each pip would be worth €9.18, calculated as:
(0.0001 * 100,000) / 1.0899 = 9.1755
Forex pip values are calculated as follows:
Pip Value = (Pip in decimal places * Trade Size) / Market Price
